Let it Out! (Ode to the Mind)

As we struggle into adulthood we wonder what to do
What used to make sense to us, no longer holds true
Do we lock the beast in the basement and throw away the key
Or face the demons, feel the heat and simply set it free…

Distant choices, snapshots of meaning, glimpses of sorrow
Seared into the child’s today to control the adults tomorrow

Our life is filtered through the haze of a 5-year-old’s decision
We convince ourselves of maturity – ignoring the original incision
A distant event: an old conclusion
Drawn without perspective cementing the illusion

It’s not what happens that matters – is the motivational mantra cry
But it does – it matters because of the decisions you make around the lie
We talk of the inner child as though it were left out in the cold
Wake up! – Who do you think makes us “do as you are told”

Distant choices, snapshots of meaning, glimpses of sorrow
Seared into the child’s today to distort the adults tomorrow

The repeated behaviours and illogical choices
The uneasy feelings, the little voices…
You are not your past of that I am sure
But understand its hold and administer the cure

To know where you are going you have to know where you’ve been
The good, the bad and the ugly deserves to be seen
This is who I am; if you don’t like it walk away
Or stick around; remove some masks, you may decide to stay

So, unleash the demons – set free the fear
Wail if you want to, shed the odd tear
Dive into your potential, scream and shout
Uncage the beast in the basement – let the f**ker out!
